Bedford S Model, the type of car carrier I would meet along the highway.

International R 190, one of the most popular trucks of the 50’s and early 60’s for long distance haulage.

International R190 with pantec. They were generally loaded and unloaded by hand from the rear.

Commer with nice low load. Most were diesel of a unique configuration and rated as I remember at 14hp but developed enough to tow a bogie trailer, it was said that on a winter night they could be heard ½ hour before seen. International R180 in the background.

Mack Legion B Series These were the most desirable diesel truck on the road of the period but costs kept them from most operators.

International AA 180
towing similar load to the B Series Mack above with about half the power. They did have the same road speed on down hill grades.

Diamond T Model 630, the smartest petrol prime mover. Many were later fitted with diesel motors. This one has a single axle pusher.

International KB8
Operated by Jack Leech at Castlemaine in the 1940’s first as a wood truck then carting red gum logs to Melbourne from Cairn Curran and later on interstate. The business Jack started still operates today as J.J. Leech & Sons.

Mercedes Benz L315 Diesel Operated by Castlemaine local legend Ron Rice in the 1950’s. Quite a big truck for the period. 150hp, 6 speed box hub reduction diffs with 50 mph road speed.

Later owned by Castlemaine trucker, Barney McMahon.

Chewton’s Mick Llewellyn’s International 180 With stock crate. Mick operated wood trucks and with the change over from wood also did stock carting. He lived to be 100 years old

Local carrier Bill Mathews’s Dodge restored to its former flory. Bill was a local carrier and woodcarter up until the 60’s. He also had a Ford stockcrate

White 3022- Circa 1956
This was a big rig in its day with 145hp engine hitched up to a purpose built pantech manufactured on a freighter trailer for A. Blackmore of Sydney.Two of these Whites were used on the Sydney-Melbourne interstate runs taking 36 hours each way.

Tom Kruse
One of the many famous truckies of the 1940’s & 50’s was the Birdsville Outback Mailmanm Tom Kruse, who delivered the mail and supplies to people all up the Birdsville Track.
 
Tom, as were many others, responsible for opening up the outback and making it possible for people to live in the harsh environment, and the trials and tribulations of every day life.
 
I first heard of the Birdsville Mailman back in the 1950’s in the movie “The Back of Beyond’.
