MACK B61 RESTORATION - 2000

BY IAN LEE

In 1957 on my first trip to Queensland I was to see my first B Model on the road side and a love affair with this model blossomed.

In 1998 I purchase a B Model with the idea of restoring it. In 2000 I found out about a special truck show in Alice Springs and with the help of Peter Clapton we decided to restore the B model for the truck show.

On phoning around for parts including a running engine, we found out Robert Green from Lancefield would sell his B Model which he had found at Tingha in NSW and we purchased this truck which gave us enough parts to build a truck in time for the show.

When Robert found the truck it had been resting in peace for we believe 14 years.

With only a week to go, it starts to look like a B Mack.

Ready for its first big trip, Wednesday morning 2 days from show time and its called “Crazy Bear”.

The B Models at Alice Springs 2000. “Crazy Bear” is in the centre and only 98 days from first starting the project.

Later on we fit a homes wrecker with doors like the first gear mod.

The truck had spent its working life mostly in Queensland and Northern New South Wales and it returns to rest in peace as part of an excellent collection in North Queensland where its new custodians have a great respect for the B Model, and its contribution to our transport history and “Crazy Bear” will always have a comfortable home.
