TONKA TOYS IN THE WEST

BY IAN LEE

A friend of mine called and left these shots of a truck he’s working with in Kalgoorlie in Western Australia where a large portion of the big mining operators are working, this one is not the type used by any other company, that has a motor under the last trailer. The photo where he is standing beside the unit is a model known as a “Big Foot Off Road”, it’s a KW C510 tandem drive with 19 Litre 600hp Cummins 18 speed, has no springs and rides on rubber blocks with 1400 earth moving tyres, and has two radiators with hydraulic fans.

The bonnet is so large that it opens in 3 sections, the truck and trailers have a gross of 335 metric tons, (a metric ton is 2200lbs) and a tare weight of 110 ton loaded, road speed is 40Km per hour, and empty 60 km per hour, the drive axles are 10ft wide and the trailers are 12ft wide and can pick up 2 ton of mud from the haul roads.

The 2nd photo with the four trailers, is the truck he is driving now, it’s a KW T 904, tri drive super quad and can operate on public roads at 194 ton gross, powered by a C1600 600hp Cat, 18 speed, these trucks do 7 loads per 12 hour shift, of up to 50Km. The loads are gold bearing material.

The trucks are serviced on a pit long enough for the truck and trailers
